چکیده
We read with interest the report by Assi and colleagues1 on the distribution of transudates and exudates between cytolog¬ ically proved malignant pleural effusions. The authors found that one of the 98 patients with malignant pleural effusions enrolled in the study, had a borderline transudate and had congestive heart failure at the time of the thoracentesis. The authors concluded that cytologically positive pleural effusions for malignancy are always exudates and that cytologic evalua¬ tion for malignant cells of a transudative pleural effusion is not recommended.

DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN BENIGN, REACTIVE AND MALIGNANT CELLS IN SEROSAL BODY FLUIDS BY AgNOR STAINING
Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) were determined in 94 pleural, pericardial and peritoneal effusions. The results were correlated with cytologic diagnosis to determine the diagnostic potential of this technique. Cytologically the number of normal, reactive and malignant effusions were 32, 28 and 34 respectively. The mean AgNOR counts for normal, reactive and malignant spec...
متن کاملTh1 and Th2 Cytokine Profiles in Malignant Pleural Effusion
Background: The alteration of Th1 and Th2 cytokine levels is the subject of controversy in pleural effusions caused by malignancy, a situation that favors a Th2 immune response. Objective: To examine the different levels of IL-4 and IL-10 (Th2 cytokines), and IL-2 and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) (Th1 cytokines) in malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions. Method: The cytokine levels in pleural fl...
متن کاملEchogenic swirling pattern as a predictor of malignant pleural effusions in patients with malignancies.
OBJECTIVES Chest ultrasonography is a useful diagnostic tool for the detection of pleural effusions of different etiologies. Our purpose was to determine whether the echogenic swirling pattern identifiable on real-time chest ultrasonographic images is a predictor of malignant pleural effusions in patients with malignancies. DESIGN Medical records of patients undergoing chest ultrasonography i...
متن کاملVascular endothelial growth factor levels and induction of permeability in malignant pleural effusions.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important mediator of angiogenesis and vascular permeability. We hypothesized that malignant pleural effusions may contain high levels of VEGF protein as well as other cytokines implicated in these processes. Pleural effusions cytologically proven to be malignant were collected from 39 patients with various types of cancer, and VEGF, interleukin-8...
